Saxony-Anhalt: Less game shot in Saxony-Anhalt's forests

Saxony-Anhalt's hunters shoot fewer animals. For which animal species are the number of kills particularly low?

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The number of animals shot in Saxony-Anhalt fell in the past hunting season. The state hunting association announced that the number of kills was declining for almost all animal species. In the hunting year 21/22, the fallow deer fell by nine percent compared to the previous year. The so-called shooting plan was only 70 percent fulfilled in the country. The value is particularly low in the district of Anhalt-Bitterfeld at around 20 percent.

The decline in wild boar kills by 18 percent compared to the previous year to 32,430 pieces is also clear, as a spokesman for the hunting association said. The strongest drop in distance was reported in Jerichower Land with 50 percent fewer kills. However, the participation of wild boar in registered wildlife accidents also fell by 34 percent. This would allow the assumption that the decline in distance is not due to reduced hunting intensity, but to a brief reduction in wild boar populations as part of the prevention of African swine fever, the spokesman said.

The declining number of kills also continued for other animal species, the spokesman said. The hare, the wild rabbit, the pheasant, as well as wild geese and wild ducks lined up with losses. Fewer badgers and foxes were also shot.

There was an increase in kills in red deer. According to the hunting association, 4734 pieces were reported, nine percent more than in the previous year. The district of Harz covered almost a third of the entire red deer range in the state with over 1,500 shot animals. The increase in the distance is probably due to the increased number of driven hunts, said the spokesman. These could take place more frequently after the lockdowns.
