Saxony-Anhalt: Many employees in Saxony-Anhalt are threatened with low pensions

Work for 40 years and then retire - depending on earnings, many people in Saxony-Anhalt will only receive a pension of less than 1200 euros according to a calculation.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Around two-thirds of full-time employees in Saxony-Anhalt are threatened with a pension of less than 1,200 euros after 40 years of work. This emerges from information from the Federal Ministry of Labor that the left-wing faction in the Bundestag asked for. According to the calculations, a total of 334,000 out of 501,000 workers in the country are affected.

According to the information, almost every second full-time employee nationwide should expect to receive a net pension of less than 1200 euros despite 40 years of work. Full-time employees would currently have to earn 3413 euros gross per month in order to calculate a pension of 1200 euros after this period.

An "old-age poverty avalanche" is rolling towards Saxony-Anhalt, said Dietmar Bartsch, leader of the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag, the German Press Agency. "Wage and pension levels are often too low in Germany. The East is particularly affected." The statutory pension often no longer secures the standard of living. "That has to change! Especially in view of the galloping inflation, significant wage increases and a gradual increase in the pension level to 53 percent are necessary," says Bartsch.

The leader of the left faction proposes a pension fund like in Austria, where the average pension is 800 euros higher than in Germany. "This is possible because not only employees and employers pay in there, but all citizens with an income from work - including members of parliament, civil servants, the self-employed and managers. What Austria can do, Germany must also be able to do."

The Deutsche Rentenversicherung Mitteldeutschland (DRV) recommends that employees seek advice on the subject of old-age provision in good time. Therefore, pension information is sent regularly, said a spokeswoman when asked. In addition, from the summer of 2023, everyone can use a digital pension overview on the Internet to find out about their individual entitlements from statutory, company and private pension schemes.
