Halle (dpa/sa) - In the merry month of May, significantly more tourists from Germany and abroad came to Saxony-Anhalt this year than in the same month of 2021. According to preliminary information, there was also an increase compared to the month of the previous year, which was more affected by the corona pandemic the number of overnight stays, as announced by the State Statistical Office on Tuesday. Popular destinations were above all the Altmark, the Harz Mountains and the Harz foothills. On average, tourists stayed in the country for 2.5 days in May, compared to 3.3 days in the same month last year, albeit with fewer overnight stays.

As reported by the state office, the accommodation providers in Saxony-Anhalt registered almost 320,200 guest arrivals and around 786,700 overnight stays in May of this year. This was a significant increase in both guests (May 2021: 75,246) and overnight stays (247,264) compared to the same month last year. The sleeping accommodations offered were 33.0 percent occupied this year, in May 2021 only around 13 percent.

In May of this year, the guests came mainly from Germany (94 percent). However, the number of tourists from abroad more than doubled to 20,200 compared to the same month last year. The figures on the development of tourism are only comparable to a limited extent. Because the statisticians evaluated the preliminary information from almost 1,100 accommodation facilities that were open in May. In the same month last year, there were 940 companies that received guests in view of the measures taken at the time to contain the corona pandemic.
