Halle (dpa/sa) - More winter wheat has been grown in Saxony-Anhalt. The area under cultivation has increased by 11,051 hectares or 3.7 percent compared to 2021, the State Statistical Office in Halle announced on Monday based on initial estimates. Farmers grew winter wheat, including spelt and einkorn, on a total of 308,240 hectares. With a good 59 percent, it has the largest share of grain, which is expected to be 518,310 hectares for the 2022 harvest. The total area under cultivation is 1.9 percent larger than in the previous year.

The field cultivation with grain maize and corn-cob mix covers 19,421 hectares and is thus 4.6 percent less than in the previous year, with silo and green maize the area under cultivation fell by 18.2 percent to 122,818 hectares. Sugar beets were drilled on 51,714 hectares (minus 6.3 percent). For potatoes, the area under cultivation is 12,764 hectares, down 6.7 percent from 2021. The estimate is based on the area sown in April 2022 compared to the area under cultivation according to the 2021 main land use survey.
