Halle (dpa/sa) - The municipalities in Saxony-Anhalt became more indebted in the first half of the year. At the end of July, the municipal core budgets had around 2.735 billion euros in debt, as the State Statistical Office in Halle announced on Wednesday. This corresponded to an increase of EUR 121 million or 4.6 percent compared to the same point in the previous year.

At the end of the first half of 2022, the independent cities recorded a debt level of 853 million euros. This was an increase of 16.8 percent or EUR 122 million compared to June 30 of the previous year. The debts of the districts increased within one year by 28 million euros and thus 5.0 percent to 588 million euros. Municipalities belonging to the district and associated municipalities were said to be indebted with 1.295 billion euros. That was 2.2 percent less than at the same time in 2021.
