Saxony-Anhalt: New plant for energy from organic waste in operation

Bernburg (dpa/sa) - A plant for the fermentation of organic waste has gone into operation in Bernburg (Salzland district). This makes it possible to generate sustainable energy, the company MVV Biogas GmbH announced on Monday. In the plant, environmentally friendly biogas is generated from everything that belongs in the bio bin, such as leaves. Around 300 households could be supplied with heat and 2,200 households with electricity, said the mayor of Bernburg, Silvia Ristow (left). The city has around 33,000 inhabitants.

According to Environment Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD), Saxony-Anhalt plays a leading role nationwide in the generation and use of renewable energies. Biogas and biomethane are considered an alternative to natural gas. According to the company, 20 million euros were invested in the project in Bernburg. Around 33,000 tons of organic waste from the city and the surrounding area are to be processed in the plant. About 21,000 megawatt hours of biomethane are produced each year from the biogas produced during fermentation. Biomethane is a renewable energy.
