Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Three weeks after the start of the new school year, the number of Ukrainian schoolchildren in Saxony-Anhalt has increased slightly. The Ministry of Education announced on Monday in Magdeburg that 5,400 boys and girls from Ukraine would be taught at general and vocational schools. The numbers were collected on Thursday last week. A week earlier it was 99 fewer.

As of last Thursday, a total of 27,854 war refugees from the Ukraine have been taken in directly in the administrative districts and urban districts in Saxony-Anhalt. According to the Interior Ministry, at least 6,766 are school-age children.

As the Ministry of Education further announced, there are now 175 Ukrainian teachers working in Saxony-Anhalt, who primarily teach around 100 arrival classes. In addition, there are 55 teachers for German as a target language who are supposed to teach the children and young people the German language.
