Saxony-Anhalt: plans for a 200 million euro program for monuments are shaking

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - By 2027, 200 million euros are to flow into the renovation of ten large palaces and castles in Saxony-Anhalt - now the plans for the special investment program are shaky. The current macroeconomic developments as a result of the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine presented the Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt with "enormous challenges in the implementation" of the program, the state government replied to a small question from the left-wing member of the state parliament Christina Buchheim. The rapidly rising inflation rate, building cost developments that were difficult to calculate and material shortages were given as examples.

Changes in the project plans are "quite to be expected" in terms of time, finances, quantity and quality. So far, however, no change to the list of measures has been decided.

The federal and state governments each finance half of the special investment program 1. Extensive renovation work is planned for ten palaces and castles, and some new buildings are also planned. According to previous plans, Köthen Castle and Neuenburg Castle, for example, are to benefit from this with around 30 million euros each. In addition, a central depot for the collections of the cultural foundation is to be built in Halle for around 50 million euros. The start of the program, which was originally intended to run for eight years, had been delayed several times.
