Halberstadt (dpa/sa) - During a traffic safety campaign in the Harz Mountains, the police checked 50 vehicles and found 16 violations. Among other things, a 17-year-old moped driver was on the road on Saturday without insurance cover for his motorcycle, the police in Halberstadt said. A driver who was stopped with a heavy trailer did not have the necessary driving license. The officials initiated criminal proceedings, the men were not allowed to continue their journey. A rapid drug test was carried out on a 26-year-old driver. According to the information, he must now expect a fine of at least 500 euros, two points and a month's driving ban.

With additional speed checks in the Upper Harz, the officials punished 31 violations in 1119 measured vehicles. The highest excess was found in a driver with a speed of 111 – at a permitted 70 kilometers per hour.

The "Safe through the Harz" campaign is intended in particular to increase road safety for motorcyclists. At an information stand there were tips for more safety when riding a motorcycle. Bright yellow warning vests were handed out for better visibility, it was said.
