Saxony-Anhalt: Pretend love: woman cheated by a quarter of a million euros

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - According to the police, a woman from Magdeburg was cheated by about a quarter of a million euros. She stated that she had been scammed by a so-called love scammer via the internet. These are people who, with a false identity, make promises of love to other people via dating platforms and put them under psychological pressure. The woman had been in contact with the internet acquaintance for eight years, the police said on Monday. She also took out a loan to meet the money demands.

According to investigators' experience, so-called love scammers sometimes stay in contact for years in order to bind their victims to them and gain their trust. Under various pretexts and with strong declarations of love, they repeatedly state that they urgently need a lot of money. Such a pretext could be an expensive, vital operation for a sick child or another serious stroke of fate, the police warned.
