Saxony-Anhalt: Re-elected district administrators and mayors receive more money

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Re-elected district administrators and full-time mayors in Saxony-Anhalt will receive more money from July. This is provided for in the new municipal salary ordinance that the cabinet passed on Tuesday. Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) said after the cabinet meeting in Magdeburg that being re-elected is a recognition of the citizens for their work.

"This regulation will also apply retrospectively," said the CDU politician. Local politicians who have already been re-elected in the past also receive the next higher salary bracket. According to the Ministry of the Interior, this affects around 40 people.

There are currently 122 full-time mayors and eleven district administrators in Saxony-Anhalt. They are divided into salary groups according to the number of inhabitants in their area. A mayor in a municipality with 15,000 to 20,000 inhabitants, for example, receives level B2 (around 8,000 euros). After his re-election, the chief administrative officer then moves up to level B3 (8400 euros).

At the same time, the scope of the so-called expense allowances will be raised for the first time in 31 years. This serves to compensate for the additional costs caused by the office. This includes, for example, setting up a study or buying appropriate clothing. Zieschang described the increase as "overdue". The exact amount of the monthly expense allowance paid is determined on site.

The municipalities have been demanding higher remuneration throughout the public service for some time. They are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit specialist staff such as engineers or IT specialists.
