Saxony-Anhalt: Record: Six current debates in a row in Parliament

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - This has never happened before - in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, six current debates are on the agenda on Wednesday. Each of the six factions submitted a topic. It's scheduled for around eight hours. The speaking time for each parliamentary group and the state government is ten minutes on each topic.

As a spokeswoman for the state parliament and the longest-serving MP Detlef Gürth (CDU) of the German Press Agency said, there have never been so many current debates in one day in the state parliament. "This election period seems suitable for breaking one superlative after the other: the longest session, the most annoying session, the most current debates," said Gürth. Most recently, an agenda was set in November until after midnight, but in the end the MPs got through it a little more quickly.

At the request of the CDU parliamentary group, Wednesday is about migration, the SPD wants to debate the recruitment of skilled workers, the FDP about the chemical industry. The opposition has requested current debates on the actions of the protest group "Last Generation" (AfD), on the cancellation of classes in Saxony-Anhalt (left) and on the World Conference on Nature (Greens).

According to the state parliament administration, each parliamentary group has the right to submit a current debate six times a year. The topics should be "of general and current interest and relate to the competences of the country".
