Saxony-Anhalt: Refugee Council calls for a freeze on deportations to Iran

Halle (dpa/sa) - The refugee council of Saxony-Anhalt has called for an immediate stop to deportations to Iran. "No one may be deported from Saxony-Anhalt in the midst of the brutal violence of the Iranian regime," it said in a statement on Wednesday. In view of the escalating violence against demonstrators by the Iranian regime, almost all federal states had stopped all deportations to Iran immediately, except for Saxony-Anhalt. The refugee council launched a petition that was reportedly signed by 600 people on the first day.

The Ministry of the Interior is critical of a general ban on deportations. In individual cases, those affected could assert reasons against the deportation. "Furthermore, refraining from deporting Iranians who are obliged to leave the country, especially with a view to criminals, would be a very far-reaching approach." Those who are obliged to leave Iran are already often staying in Germany. "Because people without a passport - and that is in fact all Iranian people who are obliged to leave the country - cannot be deported to Iran regardless of a deportation freeze."
