Saxony-Anhalt: Saxony-Anhalt commemorates the victims of the pogrom night of 1938

Magdeburg/Dessau-Roßlau (dpa/sa) - Memorial events are held in many places in Saxony-Anhalt today to commemorate the victims of the National Socialist pogrom night of November 9, 1938. In Dessau-Roßlau, for example, the city invited to a commemoration of the destruction of the synagogue and the murdered Jewish men, women and children from the city. A program with texts, songs and pieces of music entitled "Songs Against Oblivion" (5 p.m.) is planned for the Marienkirche in Dessau. In downtown Halle, after a commemoration at the memorial on Jerusalemer Platz, there is a guided tour through the city center that is based on the "Jewish Life in Halle" project.

In Magdeburg, a commemorative event is planned in the design forum (5:00 p.m.) followed by a silent commemorative path to the synagogue monument. From November 9th to 10th, 1938, the synagogue, Jewish shops and apartments in Magdeburg were destroyed.

There were pogroms against Jews throughout the German Reich. More than 1,300 people were killed and 30,000 people were deported to concentration camps during violent riots by members of the SA and SS under the central direction of the Nazi leadership. Around 7,500 Jewish shops were demolished, around 1,400 synagogues and places of worship were set on fire. The systematic destruction of Jewish life in Europe soon followed the systematic destruction of Jewish institutions.
