Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of inhabitants fell by 11,431 in 2021. At the end of December, 2,169,253 people were still living in the state, the State Statistical Office announced in Halle on Tuesday. The reason for the minus is that more people died than babies were born. This so-called birth deficit was reported to be 21,265 people.
So-called migration gains had the opposite effect. According to this, more people moved to Saxony-Anhalt last year than moved away from there. Overall, the migration gain was around 10,000 people, as the state office announced. In 2021, around 56,000 people from abroad or other federal states moved to Saxony-Anhalt. Around 46,000 left the federal state. In 2020, the migration gain in Saxony-Anhalt was still around 4000 people.
