Saxony-Anhalt: SC Magdeburg celebrates championship on the town hall balcony

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The German handball champion SC Magdeburg was received at the town hall of the state capital after the end of the Bundesliga season and enthusiastically celebrated by the fans. Players and officials also signed the city's "Golden Book" on Sunday evening.

The champion team, which turned into Magdeburg's Alter Markt in an open double-decker bus, was greeted with jubilation. Thousands of fans turned the square in front of the town hall into a green-red sea - they celebrated their heroes with chants lasting minutes.

Mayor Lutz Trümper welcomed players and officials in the "Ernst Reuter" hall. "Four minus points are proof of a great performance and the title is deserved, deserved, deserved," said Trümper. "You have done a great job for the city of Magdeburg, thank you."

After the obligatory entry in the "Golden Book", Jannick Green (moves to PSG) and Magnus Gullerud (to Kolstad) entered the town hall balcony and said goodbye to their fans. "I'll never forget what we've done together for the last two years," Gullerud called out to the green-reds who were waiting. Green thanked him for "eight crazy years" and added: "Without you we would never have become champions."

Finally, fans and team celebrated the second all-German championship in the club's history in the evening sun. The SCM last won the Bundesliga title in 2001, at that time with today's head coach Bennet Wiegert as a player under master coach Alfred Gislason.
