Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In a duel between champions and cup winners, SC Magdeburg lost out to THW Kiel in the Bundesliga handball league on Saturday evening. In front of 6,600 spectators in the sold-out Getec Arena, the game ended 33:34 (16:19), in the meantime the guests led by eight goals, but still had to tremble in the end. The best Magdeburg shooter was Omar Ingi Magnusson with nine goals, the SCM remains fourth in the table after the second league defeat.

In an otherwise balanced early phase, Kiel's goalkeeper Niklas Landin made the difference and secured his team a narrow lead (5:3/9.). The Magdeburg offensive game suffered from too many technical errors, so the SCM stayed on but could not turn the game around (12:13/24.). At the start of the second half, THW increased their lead to four goals, while Magdeburg still couldn't find their game (18:22/34). So the gap grew to up to eight hits.

The SCM switched offensively in defense and SCM trainer Bennet Wiegert (40th) appealed to his team's honor during the time-out: "It's not about the result, now the character shows. We still want to win the game." In fact, SC Magdeburg worked their way up on the visitors goal by goal (31:33/58.), so that Wiegert was still able to say in the last time-out (59.): "I want to win the game!" In the final minute, SCM had the upper hand after a red card for Patrick Wienczek (59th), but was unable to equalize.
