Saxony-Anhalt: Schellenberger honors soldiers and police officers abroad

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Around 200 soldiers and 3 police officers from Saxony-Anhalt are currently abroad and are not spending Christmas and the turn of the year with their families. State Parliament President Gunnar Schellenberger paid tribute to the special commitment they are making in various conflict zones. On Tuesday, he presented five families of Bundeswehr soldiers from Saxony-Anhalt with a medal of recognition. The medal has been presented annually by the presidents of the state parliament since 2003.

"As members of the Bundeswehr and the police from Saxony-Anhalt, the soldiers and police officers also contribute to a positive image of Germany and our state of Saxony-Anhalt," explained Schellenberger. "On behalf of all members of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt, I wish you a successful mission, health and well-being. May you return home unharmed physically and mentally and may God's blessing accompany you."

Since the soldiers and police officers stationed abroad cannot receive the medal in person, it is symbolically presented to relatives. According to the state parliament, the emergency services will then receive the medal via field post at their place of work abroad.
