Saxony-Anhalt: "School without Racism" network is growing

School is more than German, math, sport. It is also about conveying values. The network "School without Racism - School with Courage" contributes to this. It grows in Saxony-Anhalt.

Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, 160 schools currently bear the title "School without Racism - School with Courage". Converted to the population, the country with the Courage schools is number 1 in Germany, explained the deputy director of the state center for political education, Cornelia Habisch, in Magdeburg. Among other things, 59 secondary and community schools bear the title, 48 high schools, 18 elementary schools and 12 special schools. After seven new schools were added in 2019, there were two in 2020 and three last year. So far this year, eight schools have received the title. Continue.

In the institutions with the title "School without Racism - School with Courage", the students campaign for human rights and democracy. They campaign against all forms of discrimination with campaigns and projects. According to the information, it is the largest school network in Saxony-Anhalt. The State Center for Civic Education coordinates the project.

Three more titles have already been announced for the current year. "We already have confirmation from the federal coordination office for another five schools, but the specific date is still missing," says Habisch. "This year's number is above the average for the years 2016-2019." Other schools are in the process.

So far, according to Cornelia Habisch, no school has given up the title, neither in Saxony-Anhalt nor nationwide. In Saxony-Anhalt, three title holders were only eliminated from the network due to school closures. Otherwise it would be 163 now.

The actual prerequisite for acquiring the title is that at least 70 percent of all school members accept the self-image of a Courage School and vote for it. Only after such a secret election with ballot papers can the school be included in the "School without Racism - School with Courage" network. The self-commitment includes, for example, that the school carries out sustainable projects, campaigns and events to overcome discrimination, especially racism. In cases of violence at school, discriminatory statements or actions, these should be addressed openly and ways to treat them with respect should be sought.
