Saxony-Anhalt: Schulze: Best prospects for battery production

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Despite the failure of the million-euro investment by the Chinese battery manufacturer Farasis, Saxony-Anhalt's Economics Minister Sven Schulze still sees "best prospects" for the state in battery production for the automotive industry. Settlements such as the center for fuel cells and batteries of the Japanese Horiba Group in Barleben or the test center of the automotive supplier FEV in Sandersdorf-Brehna would underline the competence in the future topic of batteries, said the CDU politician on Monday.

Schulze emphasized that it was not a decision against the location. "The reasons are to be found within the company." But he regrets Farasis' withdrawal in Bitterfeld-Wolfen.

It was previously announced that the construction of the planned battery factory of the Mercedes supplier Farasis in Bitterfeld-Wolfen with an investment volume of 600 million euros is on hold. Actually, Farasis had planned to produce battery cells there starting this year. Around 600 jobs should be created. The location should also become the European headquarters of the group. However, the company had already expressed doubts in July 2021.

However, according to its own statements and those of the city, the manufacturer still wants to come to Bitterfeld-Wolfen. The dimensions are expected to be slightly smaller than originally planned.
