Saxony-Anhalt: Seven bathing deaths in Saxony-Anhalt by July

Saxony-Anhalt (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, seven people died while swimming by the end of July this year. This means that the number of fatal swimming accidents has fallen slightly compared to the previous year, according to the interim report published by the German Life Saving Society (DLRG) on Thursday. Last year there were eight bathing deaths by July. Most of these accidents happen in the summer months.

Three cases from this year: A three-year-old boy was found dead on Easter Sunday on the banks of the Mulde in Dessau-Roßlau. The father had previously lost sight of his son. In mid-July, a 33-year-old man drowned in the Saale river in Halle. In the Hufeisensee in Halle, a 26-year-old had had a fatal accident when she jumped into the water.

According to the DLRG, at least 199 people drowned in bodies of water nationwide by the end of July this year. In the same period last year there were 184 bathing deaths. The DLRG therefore advises caution and consideration when bathing.
