Saxony-Anhalt: So far no wolf hybrids in Saxony-Anhalt

Wolves continue to spread in Saxony-Anhalt. A crossing with a dog has not yet been found.

Halle (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, no wolf hybrids have been detected so far. This was announced by the State Office for Environmental Protection on request. In the neighboring state of Thuringia, wolf-dog hybrids have already been detected several times. Recently, a recording from a photo trap near Dermbach (Wartburgkreis) showed five animals around twelve weeks old, as the Ministry of the Environment there recently announced. So-called wolf-dog hybrids are formed when wolves mate with dogs.

Such animals, which are at least three months old, must be shot according to the Federal Nature Conservation Act. This is intended to ensure the continued existence of wolves, which are strictly protected under European and national nature conservation law. The competent authority for the approval and control of the launch is the State Office for Environmental Protection.

According to the Ministry of the Environment in Saxony-Anhalt, the number of registered wolves has recently increased to around 150 specimens. The State Office for Environmental Protection recorded a total of 22 packs and 3 pairs of wolves in a report for May 2020 to April 2021. Two new packs were added during this period in Zerbst (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district) and in the Mechau-Riebau area (Altmark district of Salzwedel). In addition, the territories of six other packs from Saxony, Brandenburg and Lower Saxony partially extended to Saxony-Anhalt.
