Saxony-Anhalt: State Secretary for Economics: the federal government stands by Leuna

Leuna (dpa/sa) - The federal government wants to continue to support the industrial location of Leuna on the path to transformation. This was emphasized by the parliamentary state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, Michael Kellner (Greens), on Wednesday at the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Total refinery. The federal government will do its part, he said, with a view to the framework conditions such as planning processes.

It is about developing Leuna on the way from dependence on gas and oil to a production and transformation region for green hydrogen. 100 companies are based at the Leuna chemical site, employing 12,000 people, including 600 in the refinery. Leuna has already started to tackle the transformation in recent years, said Kellner. The background is research and projects at the chemical site on the future use of alternative energy and raw material sources such as so-called green hydrogen, which requires electricity from renewable energy sources.
