Saxony-Anhalt: The left calls for improved help for the homeless

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's state government should do more to reduce homelessness from the point of view of the left-wing parliamentary group. Socio-political spokeswoman Monika Hohmann told the German Press Agency in Magdeburg that people who had no chance on the regular housing market after conflicts in the family, due to financial problems or unclear residence status had to be given a home quickly.

"The Left Party calls for a nationwide concept for "Housing First", human and financial support for municipalities and housing associations that want to implement "Housing First" and a state-owned funding program." State statistics on homelessness are also necessary in order to be able to estimate specific needs.

"With the Housing First concept, those affected should be provided with their own apartment at an early stage. The concept is already being used successfully in other countries," says Hohmann. The state capital Magdeburg has started such a project. Central emergency shelters are avoided by many homeless people because they often experience sexual violence and theft or other bad experiences among residents.

"Giving the homeless a roof over their heads means a decent life and social security. For us on the left, the right to our own apartment is a fundamental right," said Hohmann. A study recently showed a hidden homelessness, which is concealed by the so-called "sofa hopping". People without a home of their own try to find accommodation with acquaintances, friends or family.

The parliamentary group intends to submit a corresponding application at the next state parliament session in a few days.
