Saxony-Anhalt: Two seniors cheated again by thousands of euros

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - In Saxony-Anhalt, senior citizens have again been cheated over the phone by several thousand euros. A woman in Wolfen (Anhalt-Bitterfeld district) received a call from a man who posed as a public prosecutor, the police said on Sunday. He asked her about 40,000 euros as a so-called deposit during the phone call on Thursday afternoon. Allegedly, a close relative of the woman had a traffic accident, and one person died.

A little later a man appeared at the front door. The elderly gave him 13,000 euros and the man disappeared with the money. Public prosecutors and the police repeatedly warn against such scams. Among other things, people are threatened that a family member will have to go to prison or stay there if they do not pay.

According to the police, calls that are allegedly made on behalf of a bank, computer specialists or relatives are similarly bold. A 69-year-old in the district of Wittenberg allegedly received a WhatsApp message from her daughter on Friday night: She has a new cell phone number and needs money. In good faith, the woman transferred around 3,600 euros to an account number that had been transmitted by phone, the police said.
