Saxony-Anhalt: Ulrich Siegmund should rise in the AfD parliamentary group

So far he has been the group's deputy, but if his boss has his way, Ulrich Siegmund should act as an equal chairman in the AfD parliamentary group in the future.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The head of the AfD parliamentary group may be facing a reorganization. Group leader Oliver Kirchner suggests that Vice Ulrich Siegmund should act as co-chairman in the future. "I have decided that you have to try to bring the boys forward in the group," Kirchner told the German Press Agency. "Ulrich Siegmund has been stepping on the gas for years. We deserve to elect him as group leader with equal rights. But we still have to discuss that in the group." The statute would have to be changed for that.

Siegmund has been a member of the state parliament for the AfD since 2016. The 31-year-old from Havelberger is the chairman of the Committee on Labour, Social Affairs, Health and Equal Opportunities. Siegmund told dpa about the possible co-chairmanship of the parliamentary group: "I can imagine that." He has already worked closely and trustingly with Kirchner in recent years.

Kirchner's considerations regarding the changes in the parliamentary group executive committee already go beyond this legislative period. "I could imagine that we will go into the next state election campaign with two heads: one younger and one older."

In the state elections in June 2021, the AfD became the second strongest force in Saxony-Anhalt after the CDU. The AfD received 20.8 percent of the votes, and with 23 out of 97 MPs, it is the largest opposition faction in parliament.
