Saxony-Anhalt: Wittenberg celebrates "Luther's marriage" again

Wittenberg (dpa/sa) - After a two-year break due to corona, the city festival "Luther's Wedding" begins on Friday (5 p.m.) in Wittenberg. Tens of thousands of people are expected by Sunday, the city announced. Numerous events and medieval market activities with jugglers and magic are planned. The highlight on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) will be the historic parade with performers from the wedding party in the small town.

The monk Martin Luther had married the nun Katharina von Bora in Wittenberg in the 16th century. According to tradition, she had escaped from a monastery because of him.

Because of the corona pandemic, the city festival "Luther's Wedding" 2020 had been canceled. Last year it was celebrated as an "opening weekend" with cultural events, but without a big parade with medieval flair.
