Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The youth hostel business in Saxony-Anhalt is slowly recovering from the pandemic years. Last year, the country's twelve youth hostels counted around 237,000 overnight stays, said a spokesman for the German Youth Hostel Association on Monday on request. In 2021 there were around 100,000 overnight stays.
Despite the increase, the pre-crisis level of 315,000 overnight stays in 2019 is far from being reached, the spokesman said. The upturn was slowed down significantly as a result of the energy crisis and high inflation. In particular, the business with families and leisure groups is lagging behind.
Business with school trips went particularly well in 2022. A catch-up effect can be felt in the "main target group school classes". According to the information, the number of overnight stays by this group even exceeded the level of 2019. The same was visible at conferences and seminars in 2022, said the spokesman.
