Saxony-Anhalt: Zieschang draws attention to offers of help for victims of violence

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Saxony-Anhalt's Interior Minister Tamara Zieschang (CDU) drew attention to prevention and help offers on the occasion of the International Day against Violence against Women. "Not only the state police work preventively to prevent crime and advise people who have been victims of violence," said the minister. "Numerous counseling centers and organizations are also impressively committed - they are often available around the clock."

Zieschang emphasized: "It is essential that the women concerned know about these offers - and are not afraid to take advantage of them." The State Prevention Council has put together an online prevention atlas with a large number of offers of help and support. People from the direct environment of victims of violence also find support.

According to the Ministry, all statistics show that women are significantly more likely to be affected by violence - from harassment, threats and bullying to stalking and physical violence - than men. In Germany, about every third woman is a victim of physical or sexual violence at least once in her life. They often experienced violence in close social relationships.

In Saxony-Anhalt around 4560 cases of physical or sexualized violence in the partnership were recorded last year. According to the ministry, 3,560 women were victims, which corresponds to a share of 80 percent.
