Saxony: attack on Greens members at information booth

In the Dresden mayoral election campaign, two Greens members were attacked with punches and an egg. The incumbent is outraged by the senseless violence.

Dresden (dpa / sn) - An unknown elderly man attacked two people at a Greens information stand in Dresden. As the police announced on Tuesday, the attacker threw an egg on a 55-year-old woman on Monday evening. A 40-year-old took a picture of the man and then he was hit in the face. Both victims were slightly injured. The attacker got into a car and drove away. Dresden's Lord Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) condemned the act.

The attacked 40-year-old tweeted about the incident. "This is Dresden," he wrote. The attacker asked whether the Greens were in favor of arms deliveries to Ukraine - and didn't even wait for the answer. A day later he "still had swelling, headache and nose pain," he wrote on Tuesday. In a few days, however, he wants to continue campaigning for the Greens mayoral candidate Eva Jähnigen.

Incumbent Hilbert said Tuesday it was legitimate to disagree. "But violence prevents any discourse. That has nothing to do with democracy and freedom of expression, but is brutal and meaningless," emphasized the mayor. He wished all those affected a speedy recovery and the strength to continue to work peacefully for the well-being of Dresden. The mayoral election is scheduled for June 12 in the Saxon state capital.
