Saxony: BA sees room in the job market for disabled people

Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - In Saxony, around 60,000 people with disabilities are employed and subject to social security contributions. Although this is a record value, in a nationwide comparison there is still room for improvement, said the regional directorate of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) on Friday on the International Day of People with Disabilities (December 3). The proportion in Bavaria is 4.1 percent. In the nationwide leader Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it is 5.2 percent.

Saxony's companies too often leave the potential untapped - especially since people with disabilities are mostly well trained and efficient, it was said. In Saxony, 120,133 people are currently unemployed, including 8,165 severely disabled. According to the BA, 70 percent of unemployed severely disabled people are skilled workers or have an academic degree.

The performance of a person is not dependent on the characteristic of severe disability, but on personal attitude, said regional director Klaus-Peter Hansen. "People with disabilities often bring extraordinary talents and strengths with them. In addition, they are a great asset to many teams."
