Saxony: bike path bridge in Paulsdorf massively damaged on New Year's Eve

Pirna/Paulsdorf (dpa/sn) - The new cycle path bridge over the Lämmergrund in Paulsdorf at the Malter dam became the target of vandalism on New Year's Eve. As the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district office in Pirna announced on Tuesday, the roadway was probably significantly damaged by firecrackers. There are cracks and visible indentations in the surface.

"As an immediate measure, the bridge through the city of Dippoldiswalde was closed to bicycle traffic," it said. The bridge consists of an aluminum construction that could have been damaged by the high temperatures of the fireworks. The Roads Department is now to check road safety. Pedestrians can still use the bridge.

The bridge is part of a planned cycle path around the Malter dam and was opened to traffic on December 17, 2021. According to the district office, the building cost a good 1.1 million euros.
