Dresden (dpa/sn) - The flood of the century in Saxony 20 years ago and its reappearance in 2013 prompted Saxony to make huge investments in flood protection. According to the Ministry of the Environment, around 3.3 billion euros have been spent since 2002 on repairing flood damage and protecting against such events. The money comes from EU, federal and state funds. In the years 2003 to 2005, protection concepts for waters of the first order and the Elbe were drawn up. A flood protection program with 749 measures, some of which are very complex, is based on this. 570 of these have currently been implemented, 23 are in the construction phase and 156 in the planning stage. The largest projects were the flood protection for Grimma (57 million euros) and the low-level mob retention basin (50 million euros).
