Saxony: BMW increases production of battery modules for electric cars

Leipzig (dpa / sn) - BMW is expanding its production of electric drives in Germany. The second production line for battery modules started on Monday at the Leipzig plant, as the company announced. "The Leipzig plant remains energized," said plant manager Petra Peterhänsel. After BMW i3 production is phased out, the skills and experience of the employees will be used and jobs secured in the long term. In this way, the Leipzig location remains viable.

The car manufacturer has invested 70 million euros at its Leipzig location in the production line alone. Around 250 employees will ensure the production of the battery modules in the second production line by the end of 2022. More than 700 people are currently employed in the e-component production area at the Leipzig site. The first production line started up in Leipzig in May 2021. By 2030, the BMW Group wants to achieve at least half of its sales with all-electric vehicles.
