Saxony: Call for donations for international students in need

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - More and more international students are getting into financial difficulties in Leipzig. Therefore, donations are urgently requested, said the association for foreign students in Leipzig on Tuesday. "As a result of the Covid 19 pandemic and the Ukraine war, the number of students in need has risen sharply," said Hans-Bert Rademacher, chairman of the association and professor of differential geometry at the Mathematical Institute at the University of Leipzig. The club is reaching its limits financially.

The maximum funding amount has already been reduced from 500 to 400 euros. "Unfortunately, we were also forced to reject applications for this reason, for the first time in our thirty-year history as a club," said Rademacher. This year, 39 students in need have already been helped. "The consequences of rising food and energy prices for international students are not yet foreseeable. There is a risk that other international students will get into financial difficulties and need unbureaucratic help."
