Saxony: Charging station to pave the way for battery trains to the Ore Mountains

Annaberg-Buchholz (dpa/sn) - Modern battery trains are also to roll into the Ore Mountains in the future. To this end, railway companies are planning to set up a new charging station in Annaberg-Buchholz. The conventional grid frequency of 50 Hertz is to be used there instead of the 16.7 Hertz that is usual in rail traffic. As a result, the investments are lower and the structure is very compact, according to a statement distributed by the Central Saxony Transport Association on Tuesday.

After a test phase, it is planned to use the system in regular operation to charge battery trains from Chemnitz. The background is that from the end of 2023, battery-electric trains are to replace the old diesel trains on the Leipzig-Chemnitz route. Selected connections could then run beyond Chemnitz to the Ore Mountains, it said. An investment sum for the charging station was not mentioned. The costs would be met from the partners' own funds.
