Saxony: children's mayors from Thalheim awarded

Berlin/ Thalheim (dpa/sn) - Two former children's mayors from Thalheim (Erzgebirge district) have been awarded the German Engagement Prize. The students Nikita and Josy received the award on Thursday evening in the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. In 2018, they were the first to apply for the office in the Ore Mountain town, the jury said.

With the project, the city of Thalheim wants to involve children between the ages of six and twelve in democratic processes. The children mayors made children heard and were representatives of their generation and city, it was said.

With the award, civic engagement in Germany has been recognized since 2009. Sponsors are the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the Deutsche Bahn Foundation. The prize is endowed with 5000 euros.
