Saxony: Citizens help to secure valuable files in Mühlhausen

Mühlhausen (dpa / sn) - Around two dozen volunteers in Mühlhausen lent a hand in securing historical files for the city archive. "The community action was well received," said a spokeswoman for the city on Monday afternoon. Under expert guidance, around ten boxes of files were carefully cleaned and numbered sheet by sheet. A total of six linear meters of files were available. According to the information, not everything was done. A next action is therefore planned for March or April 2023. The city archive has a total of 2.2 running kilometers of files.

In order to preserve the historical documents in the long term, they are to be gradually digitized. The city had asked citizens for help. "In the normal course of business, that's hardly possible," explained Helge Wittmann, city archivist in Mühlhausen. The city keeps numerous valuable holdings in the historic town hall, including photos, postcards, maps and local history literature.
