Saxony: Consumer prices in Saxony continue to rise

Kamenz (dpa/sn) - The rise in consumer prices continued in Saxony in May. The annual inflation rate is expected to have increased to eight percent compared to the same month last year, the State Statistical Office in Kamenz announced on Monday.

The main reasons for this were the increases in energy prices (up 36 percent) and food prices (up 12.2 percent). Without these two sub-areas, annual inflation would only be about half as high at 3.9 percent. The numbers are still preliminary, they should be final on June 3rd.

According to the statistics authorities, there were consistently high double-digit growth rates in the energy market. Heating oil was up 80.2 percent compared to the same month last year. District heating rose by 32.3 percent, gas by 30.9 percent and electricity by 16.4 percent. Fuel was 42.3 percent more expensive than a year ago.
