Saxony: DGB: Government must pay more attention to rural areas

Dresden (dpa/sn) - As a consequence of the local elections in Saxony, the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) has called on the government to take its responsibility for the people in the country more seriously. "The modernization of Saxony must not concentrate on the cities, but must also bring noticeable improvements for people in rural areas. The creation of equivalent living conditions throughout Saxony must now be accelerated," explained DGB boss Markus Schlimbach on Monday in Dresden. Rural regions must not be left behind when it comes to childcare, education, local transport, health care and leisure activities.

According to Schlimbach, the election results paint a mixed picture: "The AfD was unable to come close to power. Nevertheless, there is still a regional difference in the potential voters of between 20 and 35 percent, who are not bothered by the party's openly right-wing extremist course in their voting decisions."
