Saxony: Experts warn of the negative consequences of e-cigarettes

Chemnitz (dpa/sn) - Researchers at Chemnitz University of Technology have warned of the harmful effects of e-cigarettes, for example in young people. It is true that smoking is less common among the younger generation today. However, the use of electronic replacement products such as vaporizers is increasing. "Last but not least, the advertising of such products by young influencers on social media arouses curiosity about the seemingly harmless variant of nicotine consumption," explained Sören Kuitunen-Paul from the Chemnitz smoker's outpatient clinic on Friday.

According to the experts, however, the vapor is an aerosol with pro-inflammatory, vascular-damaging and carcinogenic properties, which pose health risks that cannot yet be calculated. Some smokers see e-cigarettes as a tool to get rid of tobacco smoking. The Chemnitz experts are also critical of this. They referred to assessments by the German Society for Pneumology and Respiratory Medicine. Accordingly, the majority of users of e-cigarettes who strive for a life without smoking continue to consume conventional cigarettes or use electronic cigarettes permanently. Then they continued to be dependent.

World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on Tuesday (31 May). The smoker outpatient clinic is a facility of the Institute for Psychology at Chemnitz University of Technology. There, people are professionally accompanied who want to get out of addiction. According to the information, digital courses have also been offered since 2020.
