Hoyerswerda (dpa/sn) - The Hoyerswerda Zoo has lost a public favorite with female otter Fibi. Fibi suffered from a heart condition and was euthanized, the zoo said on Monday. Her condition has deteriorated over the past few days. Most recently, she had shown neither an appetite nor an urge to move.
Fibi came to Hoyerswerda as a foundling at Christmas 2007. She also grew up with an animal keeper - together with her dog. From him she watched the retrieval, it was said. Fibi was also happy to bring her keepers a stick at the zoo.
"Fibi was a very special one, she liked to be close to us nurses and she liked to play. Her loss hurts a lot," said animal keeper Saskia Schroll. At almost 15 years old, Fibi is one of the oldest otters living in European zoos. A new companion is to be sought for Fibi's partner Baltazar.
