Torgau (dpa/sn) - For almost a week, a forest fire in Arzberg (Northern Saxony district) kept the emergency services in suspense - now there is an initial balance sheet. Total costs of at least 1.5 million euros are expected, the district office announced on Friday in Torgau. The fire had spread over 47 hectares of forest and 3 hectares of fields in the north Saxon municipality of Arzberg.

Firefighters from all city and community fire departments in the district of North Saxony were deployed to fight the fire. They were supported by weirs from Halle and Leipzig, from the districts of Bitterfeld and Leipzig and from Brandenburg. In addition, there were forces from the German Red Cross (DRK) and the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), the police and the Bundeswehr, who had also sent armored recovery vehicles in addition to fire-fighting helicopters. In addition, farmers had made tractors and fire water trailers available.

North Saxony's District Administrator Kai Emnuel (independent) thanked everyone involved: "When something is at stake, people stick together."
