Saxony: Florian Illies curates show on Dresden romantic Venus

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The journalist and author Florian Illies is the curator of an exhibition on the previously little-known Dresden artist Albert Venus (1842-1871). According to the State Art Collections (SKD), he was also responsible for the suggestion for the show entitled "The Last Romantic" (October 8 to January 22, 2023) in the Kupferstich-Kabinett. With Venus, the Dresden Romanticism "comes to its shining end", Illies is quoted in it. Naturalistic and impressionistic tones that flashed during trips to Italy in 1866 and 1869 made him "a highly interesting artist figure in the midst of a great aesthetic turning point".

According to the information, it is the first solo exhibition on the landscape painter, draftsman and etcher, who died of tuberculosis at the age of only 29. More than 120 works provide an insight into the artist's short career. Venus was considered the favorite student of the great romantic Ludwig Richter (1803-1884), in whose shadow he had stood until now.
