Oybin (dpa/sn) - A forest fire broke out on Friday in the Saxon spa town of Oybin (Görlitz district). "The fire is not under control and is spreading," said deputy district fire chief Holger Heckmann. About 100 firefighters are on duty.
The fire was reported around 10:00 a.m. at a railroad crossing and spread quickly. "The extinguishing work is extremely difficult and demanding because it is an impassable mountain area. The mountain rescue service was alerted," said Heckmann.
According to the Görlitz district office, several roads in the spa town are closed. "People shouldn't be around," said spokeswoman Susanne Lehmann. In addition, the freshening wind is making things difficult for the emergency services. A firefighting helicopter should help.
