Saxony: Gävernitz opens with reconstructed burial mounds

Priestewitz (dpa/sn) - The reconstructed burial mounds in the Gävernitz Archeology Park near Grossenhain (Meissen district) are open to visitors again. "Gävernitz stands for an important archaeological monument, but also for a special voluntary commitment," said Regional Development Minister Thomas Schmidt (CDU) on Friday at the opening. The two mounds that were excavated in 1929 and 1930 are characteristic. The larger of the two burial mounds in particular caused a stir with a diameter of 14 meters.

The association Archäologiepark Gävernitz took care of the reconstruction. He is supported with 44,500 euros from the so-called Leader program of the EU - with this a position for information and educational offers is to be created. Gävernitz, with its burial ground from the Bronze Age, is said to be Saxony's oldest archaeological open-air museum.
