Saxony: Head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution: Right-wing extremists exploit the vacuum

Dresden (dpa/sn) - From the point of view of Saxony's President for the Protection of the Constitution, Dirk-Martin Christian, right-wing extremists are currently exploiting a vacuum in view of people's financial worries, which leaves the bourgeois-democratic spectrum open. "People are protesting because they have a legitimate reason: They are worried about how they should pay the rent, the energy bill and the groceries. These are existential questions. These fears are now being increasingly articulated on the street - unfortunately with the help of right-wing extremists," said Christian of the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" (Monday).

If people run with the Free Saxons, they shouldn't be judged immediately, "because at the same time, the democratic forces in our society aren't presenting these people with a political platform at the moment." Right-wing extremists took advantage of this vacuum for themselves. The head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution emphasized: "Now it's up to the parties, the associations, the unions and also the local churches. Everyone has to take care to meet the calls for help from the people on the street."

Dirk-Martin Christian continued: "The turning away of not a few people from democracy has been a problem in Saxony for a long time, not just these days when money and freezing are at stake. There is a real danger that more and more people will wrong camps - i.e. into right-wing extremism."
