Saxony: Health insurance: Around 63,000 people in Saxony with epilepsy

Dresden (dpa / sn) - According to the Barmer health insurance company, 63,000 people in Saxony have epilepsy. This disease manifests itself, for example, in cramps, uncontrolled twitching and loss of control over one's own body. After an attack, those affected often feel the need to sleep and appear disoriented. "It is important that this behavior is taken seriously during or after a seizure and not misinterpreted," said Barmer country manager Fabian Mangerl on Tuesday before Epilepsy Day (October 5).

According to him, those affected should not be held down, but should be placed in a stable side position if they are unconscious. The emergency call should therefore be dialed when the seizure first occurs or lasts longer.

According to the Barmer Doctor Report, more men were treated for the disease in 2020, their proportion was 14 percent higher than that of women. A total of 1.55 percent of the population in Bavaria was ill, which means that the proportion has risen by more than ten percent since 2014. Around 320,000 people across the country are insured with Barmer.
