Saxony: Heavy rain brings relief after a long drought

Leipzig/Dresden (dpa/sn) - Heavy rain provided relaxation in nature at the weekend after the long drought. After many rivers suffered from low water for weeks, a number of gauges are now green on the map of the state flood center, for example on the Zwickauer and Freiberger Mulde, Flöha, the Elbe tributaries in Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains as well as on the Neisse and Spree. The risk of forest fires has also decreased significantly. While warning level 3 and higher applied almost everywhere on Thursday, the risk of forest fires nationwide on Sunday morning was only very low (level 1).

According to the German Weather Service, there was a lot of precipitation in Bavaria over the weekend. In the night to Saturday it rained mainly in the western regions, until Sunday it rained more in the east of the country. From Saturday to Sunday, the leaders were Kubschütz near Bautzen and Boxberg in Upper Lusatia. There, 77.4 and 72.2 liters per square meter were measured within 24 hours.

Clouds will rise again on Monday afternoon and bring rain into Tuesday night, meteorologist Cathleen Hickmann said. After that, high-pressure weather prevailed and temperatures above the 30-degree mark are expected in Saxony again. There could be more showers next weekend.
