Saxony: Illegal car races: 235 kilometers per hour on federal roads

Leipzig (dpa/sn) - During an illegal car race, two sports car drivers stepped on the gas so hard on federal highway 6 near Leipzig that the police registered around 235 kilometers per hour. In addition, the cars were traveling at a traffic light, where 70 km/h are allowed, at over 195 kilometers per hour, the police said on Friday. The 30 and 41-year-old drivers overtook each other on the right. They finally had to stop at a red traffic light - and police officers stopped the race early Thursday evening by placing an emergency vehicle across the lane.

A judge then ordered the men to surrender their driver's licenses and the vehicles to be confiscated. It is determined on suspicion of prohibited motor vehicle racing. Both vehicles were said to be traveling from Schkeuditz (North Saxony district) on the federal highway 6 in the direction of Leipzig at a significantly excessive speed.
